Ask nearly anyone who wants to know how to start an online health, fitness or nutrition business what their biggest struggle is, and chances are they’ll say, ” I don't know where to begin, I have no email list and nobody knows who I am right now. Help!”
You need to build an audience in order to grow an online business but the good news is but it's totally possible to grow your audience from nothing even if you're not ready to use paid advertising yet.Heads Up! Being invisible doesn't work on the interwebz Click To Tweet
You need eyeballs on your stuff, people have to know you exist to become a client. Basically, you need traffic.
So the big question is, where do you get all that traffic?
You borrow it.
Here are my top tips for borrowing other people's audiences in order to grow your own while offering incredible value in return.
Everyone needs content. It’s the one thing that remains consistent among all content creators—there is never enough. That’s where you can help.
By guest posting on other coaches’ blogs, you can “borrow” some of their traffic.
You can’t simply regurgitate old content and send it out in a dozen directions though. To get the best results, you’ll want to:
No list? Here’s a quick way to “borrow” someone else’s list to kickstart your own: Schedule a free event with a partner, like a training, workshop or seminar inside of a Facebook Group that share your target market.
Here’s how it works.
This is a win/win for both of you, as you gain the traffic while your group partner adds value to the community and has the potential to increase their income.
(Before you implement this strategy make sure that you've got a fabulous freebie and an email sequence that connects and nurtures so that all the new people you'll be attracting on to your email list will be given a chance to get to know you and become part of your tribe.)
Want to really show off your expert status and bring traffic back to your site, too? Get interviewed!
Just like authors with new books and actors with new movies, coaches and service providers can get in front of new audiences simply by answering questions about what they know.
Of course, you’re probably not going to appear on the Today Show or Oprah (yet – but heck I'm all for goals!), there are still plenty of opportunities out there for health and fitness coaches.
Look for interview and speaking opportunities on:
Start by reaching out to your peers and to podcast and blog hosts you most admire. Get the word out with your friends and your list that you’re looking for opportunities.
Even if you don’t yet have a list of your own, it’s easy (and fun) to kickstart your audience growth simply by making yourself available for these and other opportunities. Each guest post, podcast interview and webinar is another chance to get in front of a whole new market, so take advantage of it!
Use offline teaching, coaching or training opportunities to get in front of your audience.
Every time that you teach a class, or host a workshop, or say yes to hosting that group fitness experience (that maybe doesn't pay so well), or go to speak as a expert at a local event, you're still building your audience.
Encourage people who attend to follow you on social media, and offer them opportunities to join your list through regular social media posts, which means that you're not actively taking clients away from another business (be careful here and act in integrity!).
Of course, if you've got permission you can offer attendees at any live event the opportunity to join your list or to work with you further.
So now that I've given you several ideas to help you start to grow your audience from scratch which ones are you going to implement this week and next month? Let’s make it actionable! Post in the comments below and let me know.
